The teddy bear cholla, scientifically known as Cylindropuntia bigelovii, is a species of cactus native to the deserts of the Southwestern United States, primarily found in Arizona, California, and Nevada.
This cactus gets its common name from its fuzzy appearance, which is reminiscent of a teddy bear. It has densely packed clusters of spines that can easily attach to passing animals or hikers, leading to its nickname "jumping cholla." Once attached, the spines are difficult to remove and can cause painful irritation.
The teddy bear cholla can grow up to 5 feet tall and produces bell-shaped, yellow flowers in the spring. It is well-adapted to the harsh desert environment, able to survive in dry, arid conditions with minimal water and high temperatures.
Despite its prickly nature, the teddy bear cholla plays an important role in its ecosystem, providing food and shelter for wildlife such as birds, insects, and rodents. It is also a popular landscaping plant in arid regions for its unique appearance and minimal water requirements.
